MACSports Fellowship

The MACSports team at McMaster University prides itself on its collaborative nature and strong local and international network; the value of which, offers Fellows unparalleled exposure to all facets of orthopaedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. Under the mentorship of five fully-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons, Fellows gain exposure to high-volume clinical sports medicine and joint preservation practices, founded upon the principles of evidence-based orthopaedics. Subspecialty care in non-arthritic conditions of the hip, knee, and shoulder, for both adult and paediatric patients, are the primary clinical foci, with ample exposure to contemporary techniques and approaches. The fellowship additionally offers Fellows team physician opportunities at both the professional and varsity levels, providing medical coverage for the Hamilton Tiger Cats (Canadian Football League), Hamilton Forge FC (Canadian Premier League), and McMaster University athletics. The fellowship supervisors are engaged members of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, Arthroscopy Association of Canada, ISAKOS, ISHA, AOSSM, AANA, CPOG, and the International Quadriceps Tendon Interest Group, amongst others, and will encourage Fellows to participate similarly. It has not escaped notice that McMaster University is increasingly being recognized as a global leader in sports medicine research, with the group currently conducting several high-impact randomized controlled trials addressing hip, knee, shoulder, and cartilage pathology of adult and paediatric patients.

Throughout this academic, preceptor-based fellowship, Fellows will rotate through three 4-month blocks designed to facilitate ongoing exposure and opportunities for skill development across the hip, knee, and shoulder. This will be supplemented by opportunities in skills-lab environments as well. In general, the weekly structure will include two-three OR sessions and one-two clinics per week, with protected time for clinical scholarship and research activities. The Fellow will assist with ward duties and surgical aftercare of inpatients, and will participate in on-call duties for emergency care as well. The Fellow will assist with all elements of team physician coverage including training room and game/post-game coverage. The Fellow will be responsible for facilitating one Grand Rounds session (minimum) to all members of MacOrtho, and will take an active and engaged role in periodic resident arthroscopy labs, weekly sports education rounds, monthly advanced MSK radiology/orthopaedics combined rounds, and both bi-annual sports journal clubs and the Golden Horseshoe sports rounds. Regarding research activity, the MACSports group is highly productive. It is the expectation that Fellows will additionally contribute to this program, and conclude their fellowship experience with (at minimum) one publication-ready manuscript.
